News and Updates

April 2, 2010

I've archived all movies 2009 and prior.  For server performance reasons I have decided to only keep approximately 1 year worth of movies.

As always, if you have any concerns regarding this change, please visit the Comment Submittal Page.

Hi everyone.  It's been a while but I'm still here obviously!  Just wanted to drop in a share an interesting occurrence and communicate a little about the policies here.

Out of respect for the person who emailed me, I will not divulge details.  A privately-run shard admin (who's role and identity within the shard is unknown to me) recently emailed asking me to take down a particular video, claiming that it was clearly faked and reflected negatively upon the shard, and a defamation of the shard that they have much pride in.

Unfortunately, my position is as follows:  Not only do I no longer have the software installed to even view videos, but it is not my role to authenticate claims.  Furthermore, I believe there is likely no surefire way to validate a claim that a video is faked, and even if it is, I do not see that as grounds for removal. There is no terms of service here.  I consider UOMovies and its content to be like a forum, where people are allowed to say anything and there is no moderation.  Lies are spewed in the millions of gigabytes on the Internet every day, and any attempt to police that is futile.  This leaves only the defamation claim, which is a legal matter, and I will not act as judge, jury and enforcer of law.  I am subject to it though, and if I received, say, a court order, I would be inclined to act.

It has occurred to me that whatever acts occur in the video may have actually occurred on the actual shard in question, but simply were not recorded, and a "re-enactment" was created to make a point.  Fine by me, and this should further reveal the futility of using a claim that a faked video is grounds for removal.

I offered a concession:  If the shard admin could provide reasonable proof to me that the video is faked (and it wouldn't take much - really, just going to the effort to produce any proof would be sufficient), I said I would be willing to post a note attached to the video indicating this claim with a link to the proof.  I consider this a generous offer since I would have to further go to the trouble to authenticate his identity to ensure he even had the right to make such a claim, but I have not heard back.

The only time I would take down a video is in the event that I was contacted by law enforcement officials with the proper paperwork, such as a court order.  If you operate a shard and have reason to believe it is faked, I suggest you treat it similarly to how you would treat someone posting a lie to a third-party forum over which you have no control.  Post a counter-claim on the same forum (in the form of your own video here).  Blog about it.  Ban people from your server and forums if that's what you feel is right.  But I maintain my position that it is inappropriate to request that someone like me remove someone else's free speech right to communicate to others in the form of a video without due process - due process being the laws of the United States (and California) which govern this site.  If there is a law that says that a mere claim of defamation must result in an ASP removing the offending content, I'd like to know about it.  I am not a lawyer.

Having said all that, I would politely request that people not abuse the service by posting any fake videos and selecting a shard from the dropdown list that does not match the shard it was recorded on.  It does not do good to the other users who expect a video to represent the shard you selected when you uploaded it, which is a detriment to the site in general.  So, I do not condone it, but I also lack the tools, inclination or moral authority to enforce that.  I also know that if people choose to do it, they will regardless of any Terms of Service here.  So this is nothing more than a polite request, a call to action on the part of the users to try your best to not be dicks.  If you post a re-enactment, you should at least indicate that it is such.

Happy 4/20 to all you stoner UO players out there!  I don't smoke so instead of sitting around and getting baked, I cleaned up the site a bit, adding a new footer and tweaking the download link to whore out an extra ad banner.  Direct links to RPV files from other sites will still work though, don't worry.

Since this feature may be somewhat controversial, please feel free to submit a formal request to change it back to the old way via the Comment Submittal Page.  Your comments are appreciated and will be factored into any design decisions.

Happy Holidays everyone.  Just thought I'd check in, since UOMovies has been going strong for god knows how long now.  I'm very pleased to see we are up to almost 2000 movies posted to date, and clearly UOMovies.com has become the #1 repository for UO related RPV movies, though given how narrow a niche this is in the gaming world, who's to say how much of an accomplishment that is.  :)

I'm happy to see that the site has suffered no major problems aside from a few random spam attempts in some of the comment threads, which have since been cleared out.  It would appear that nobody is really using the voting or comment mechanisms, but oh well.

If there's anything I can do to improve the site, please contact me at minsc at knepfler dot com.  I just updated a few of the pages that were bare white to use the proper site template so there's a little more coherency now, if anyone is paying attention after this long.  Frankly, I'm amazed there's still a UO community after this long, even though back when I was playing it I would tell everyone who would listen that I wouldn't be surprised if UO continued for ten years after I started playing, which was 1997, so I guess I was right.  See, everyone should listen to me.  Assholes.

Sorry the uploads were broken for so long.  I just noticed.  Nobody told me (except some guy named Frank whose email I missed completely.)  Email was all messed up, not redirecting to my main account.  I don't check this site too much.  I had a server crash last month and had to rebuild a lot of stuff by hand for my customers and this site was a lower priority and I just forgot to test it.

If it happens again just spam the hell out of minsc at uomovies dot com and I'll see it.

Unfortunately I had to delete the latest 93 records, pretty much everything since Jan 1 2007, because there was no matching RPV file for those entries.  Really sorry about that.

If you see RPV sizes of 0 KB for all the latest entries, then you know the uploads is broken so don't bother.  Just let me know.

I just noticed the email address I've published on this site wasn't actually reaching me.  Heh, sorry about that.  I have so many aliases, and I often clean them up to reduce spam.  If anyone tried to email me in the past.... year or so... please re-send your message.  :)  Actually I'd really like to hear any comments anyone has on the site.  Likes, dislikes, suggestions, whatever.  The address is minsc at uomovies dot com

I was also bored so made a few minor visual changes to the site.  See if you can spot them all, and you'll earn the chance to win nothing at all!

I've never experimented with any kind of advertising network, and have always wanted to.  While I'm sure the traffic here is enough to earn me a few pennies per decade, I'm going to try it anyway just to learn about the process and tools.  Of course I've chosen Google AdSense since it appears to be the least annoying.  Right now I'm waiting for the approval.

If you want to support my site and can't donate, click the ads - but don't just click stuff randomly - read the ad, click through, and buy whatever is being advertised.  Man I'm so smart.  I'm probably the first person who thought to put ads on his site and then ask his visitors to click them!  I'LL BE RICH BEFORE I KNOW IT, THEN I'LL SHUT DOWN THIS SHITHOLE OF A SITE AND CRUSH YOU ALL AHAHAHAHA....ahahah.... oh wait, I mean, I'd really appreciate it guys, thanks.  Really, I don't care if I make any money, I'm mostly doing it to learn about AdSense so I can talk with my hosting customers about it.

July 18, 2006

I've just renewed the domain for another 5 years.  Hosting is my own, and I have other customers on this server, so I foresee no problems with that.

Long live uomovies.com!

May 25, 2006

I went through the database and cleaned up the server names.  Some of you were entering some pretty weird stuff, which was breaking the ability to sort or search for some people.  It should all be very consistent now.

When submitting, check the Server dropdown list, because I've added a ton of servers and alphabetized it.
